UNIX Gallery is pleased to present Once Upon A Timeless, a solo exhibition of paintings from American artist Ingrid Dee Magidson. The show highlights Magidson’s distinct layered approach to painting as well as new abstract works. Once Upon A Time opens with a public reception for the artist on April 22, 2016 from 6 - 8 PM. An artist Q&A will be hosted at on April 23, from 12 - 2 PM.
In this unique exhibition, Magidson reveals the energy within her work; first through her well-known mixed media paintings on multiple transparent layers, then through her newest works of constructed layers of images, objects, fabrics and resin; and here, for the first time, exhibiting her brand new abstract canvases.
In her three-dimensional, enigmatic portraits of kings, queens, nobility, and courtiers from centuries past, Ingrid Dee Magidson brings back to life her subjects and re-imagines these individuals, immortalizing them in time. The artist also explores the delicate balance between the conscious and subconscious and the ambivalence between the physical and the spiritual as expressed through the use of layered imagery that reveal depth hidden at first glance. Through this technique the artist creates compelling three-dimensional narratives of her subjects. Their focus may be royalty from the past, surrounded by the trappings of wealth and privilege, but the story is a reflection of the viewer, the human collective, and our inherent nobility of spirit.
Magidson’s artistic process integrates unique materials and images in unusual ways, always embracing experimentation. In her process nothing is off limits and boundaries are an illusion. She incorporates Renaissance imagery and 21st Century materials in unexpected ways that encourage us to review the past through the filter of modernity. Though not always immediately apparent, abstract work plays a critical role in Magidson’s creative approach. There is an intensity of emotion imbued in the layered figures that is sustained by the liberation and rejuvenation of spirit offered by working abstractly. Though often buried in her works, abstract elements harmonize and balance the artist’s paintings as well as her studio practice. In this presentation of her work, Magidson embraces further the abstract work and features several purely abstract works for the first time.
Born in Dallas in 1965, Magidson is an autodidactic artist. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, art fairs, and auction houses, including Art Miami (2014); Art Stage Singapore (2014) Art Toronto (2014); Art Aspen (2014); Art Southampton (2014); Art Silicon Valley (2014); Art Wynwood (2013); Hermitage Museum Foundation, Philips de Pury, New York (2012); Sotheby’s, New York, NY (2011); Singleton-Biss Museum of Fine Art, Santa Fe (2010).
