Christian Voigt Evolution
March 7th - April 6th, 2019

UNIX Gallery proudly presents Evolution, a solo exhibition by artist Christian Voigt. Referring to the photographic development of Voigt’s composition and scale, Evolution is simultaneously a grandiose nod to the development of life on Earth as we know it.

Evolution runs from March 7 - April 6, 2019 at UNIX Gallery, 513 West 26th Street. The exhibition will open with a VIP reception with the artist present on Thursday, March 7 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, with a public opening to follow. Special guest speaker, Dr. Mark A. Norell, Curator and Division Chair at the American Museum of Natural History, will also be joining us at this event.

Christian Voigt is a German photographer, known for his impressive images created using large-format cameras. Voigt has photographed great libraries, museums, landscapes and temples. Through his lens, Voigt captures mankind’s extraordinary buildings and architecture. “The intensity of the image, or of what one perceives as being alienated, is the reChristian Voigt Evolution March 7th - April 6th, 2019 sult of Christian Voigt’s camera technique,” explains art critic, Simone Simon, of Voigt’s work, finding “his own form and his unique style by experimenting with the proven technique of multiple exposures, first practiced in the 1930s, in which several pictures of the same image are taken on top of each other... And so what we see is an unreal reality. It is the result of an inner search for meaning that the photographer experiences as pure and natural. His intuitive method allows him to play an exciting game with time and form. His photographs of exotic nature and cosmopolitan cities look like surreal stage sets. As if they had been painted with a camera.”

Evolution refers to the development of Christian Voigt’s work as a photographer. He remains committed to perfectionism, pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible. Yet he has also embarked on a new path, and radically opened up his visual language. The results defy nearly all the criteria commonly applied to photographic art. In his unique and inimitable way, Christian Voigt has again tested the limits of photography as a medium, transforming 2-dimensional images into 3-dimensional objects.

Born in Munich, Germany, Christian Voigt lives and works in Hamburg and the south of France. Voigt’s fine art photography has been widely recognized, appearing in numerous museum exhibitions and gallery solo shows. The artist has shown in Basel, Hamburg, New York, Los Angeles, London, Saint Tropez, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Dubai.
