UNIX Gallery is pleased to present "Resilience," a solo exhibition of mixed media artworks by Houston artist Alfredo Scaroina. "Resilience" presents a new body of works from the artist and marks Scaronia’s first solo presentation in Houston by UNIX Gallery. This exhibition opens Friday, September 9th with a public reception for the artist from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

As is typical with this artists’ works in the past, the trajectory of his creative process is dictated by the reclaimed and reused materials he employs. Unique to the current artworks, however, is the manner through which the raw materials of his works are sourced and the significance with which his materials are imbued.

In preparation for this exhibition, Scaroina has engaged in many months of back and forth travel to and from his native Dominican Republic to collect the fabric used in his process work: preciously used children’s clothing, gleaned from perhaps the most culturally dissonant socio-political climate in Latin America: the Dominican-Haitian border. Through this effort, Scaroina shares with his audience the most valuable resources available in an area of preciously limited resources: humanity, tenacity, and resilience.

Clara Silvestre from the International Association of Art Critics writes, “Scaroina seizes and empowers the everyday, the daily ritual, building and creating from the foundation of consciousness, rhetoric free and rich in nuance, which embraces the splendor of expressionism and abstraction.” Silvestre also states, “Scaroina explores the brows of abstraction, and romance of shapes and unique shades of colors.”

Alfredo Scaroina was born and raised in the Dominican Republic where he received his education from Escuela de Artes Plasticas and Academia de Bellas Artes. He studied under various established artists including Latin American artist Migdalia Chavez and Spanish master Joaquin Castellote. Scaroina is represented in collections in the United States and throughout Latin America. His artwork has been presented in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo and Artistas Contemporaneos Unidos.

The artist lives and works in Houston, TX.
